Parallel Code Overview

Introduction

Modern computers have multiple computing cores in a single machine and the hydra system has several hundred such machines connected together with a high speed (infiniband) interconnect. This means that if you problem can be parallelised it can run on multiple computing cores on one or more computing nodes. This means that the walltime to run a simulation or compilation is reduced.

On hydra entire nodes (computers) are allocated to run your jobs which may be 12 or 20 cores and so some form of parallelism is essential to get the best from the system.
